Net Metering vs. Time of Use Metering
Net Metering
Net Metering is an electricity agreement for alternative energy customers.
- Under this plan, homeowners are only required to pay their electric bills once per year.
- The amount of energy that is produced by your solar PV system is subtracted from the energy that is consumed in your home over the course of a year.
- Then, the difference is paid at the lowest energy price for the net amount of energy used.
- Make sure that you have a calibrated, bi-directional electric meter that can accurately track the energy that you produce and the energy that you use.
Time of Use Metering
A Time of Use Meter or (Time of Day Meter) can be utilized so that you are charged cheaper electricity rates at non-peak times, such as at night.
- The expensive electricity is at the highest cost during the day, but you will not pay it because your solar system will be producing the energy.
- Depending on your electric company, you may need a different electric meter which may come with a one-time installation charge.
- Since the cost structure is different in each area, only a HelioNation-Approved Solar Installer will know if switching to a Time of Use Meter will better fit your needs.
